The moment I got a phone call Sunday night and heard those amazing words come from Lisa-Marie's voice... "congratulations, you have been accepted to go on the 2014 service trip to Tanzania" I was the happiest girl in the world. When I got off the phone I just had to scream! (given that I was home alone, this could have seamed a little strange.)
My Name is Sophia Affleck, I am 16 years old and currently live in Vail Colorado. By living in a wealthy, protected community, I have yet to see what the world has to offer. I can't wait to experience my trip to Tanzania, Africa.
The other day I was driving home with my mom, we were talking about my trip and how fortunate I am. My mom said, "when I was your age, there was not even a second in my mind that I would imagine traveling to Tanzania." I really have to keep in perspective how lucky and fortunate I am. I cannot take one of these seconds for granted.
This was by far my greatest accomplishment and I am so blessed to have been given this amazing opportunity to travel to Tanzania and work in the Naserian school and orphanage. I am aware this trip isn't going to be all fun and games, this will be hard work. I have had many friends participate in service trips through Children's Global Alliance, and it has truly opened their eyes, and made them see what is important in life. It isn't always about the new iphone, or new boots that came out in the fall... it is about not taking precious moments for granted, or even time with your family for granted, because many children in Tanzania that I will be helping don't have a mom or dad to go home after school to see.
